How to Estimate Stone for a Driveway

A gravel driveway requires three layers for proper construction:

  • Sub-base (4-6 inches): Large crushed stone for drainage and stability.
  • Base layer (4-6 inches): Crusher run that compacts into a solid surface.
  • Surface layer (2-3 inches): Crushed stone #57 or decorative gravel.

For a 12-foot wide, 50-foot long driveway with 10-inch total depth: 600 sq ft x 0.833 ft / 27 = 18.5 cubic yards. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that equals approximately 26 tons.

Stone Delivery and Placement

Stone is delivered by dump truck. A standard tandem-axle truck carries 10-14 tons (7-10 cubic yards). For large projects, order by the truckload to reduce per-ton delivery costs.

Stone Calculator FAQ

Measure area in square feet, multiply by depth in feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards. For 500 sq ft at 4 inches: 500 x 0.333 / 27 = 6.17 cubic yards. Add 10% for waste.

Crushed stone weighs 2,600-3,100 lbs per cubic yard. Standard #57 stone is about 2,800 lbs. Crusher run is heavier at 3,100 lbs due to fine particles filling voids.

Crusher run (ABC stone) is the best base material. #57 crushed stone is the most popular surface layer. Build driveways in three layers for proper construction.

A properly constructed stone driveway should be 8-12 inches deep total: 4-6 inches sub-base, 4 inches crusher run, and 2-3 inches surface stone.

Crusher run is a blend of crushed stone from dust-size to 1.5-inch pieces. The mix compacts into a dense, stable surface. It is the standard base material for driveways and building pads.

A tandem-axle dump truck carries 10-14 tons (7-10 cubic yards). A single-axle carries 5-7 tons. Tri-axle trucks handle 15-20 tons.
