Fill Dirt Guide

Types of Fill

Clean fill is free of organic material and debris. Structural fill must meet engineering specs for compaction. Topsoil is not fill dirt — it is organic and settles over time.

  • Clean fill: no organics or debris.
  • Structural fill: meets compaction specs.
  • Topsoil: organic, not for structural fill.

Compaction

Fill dirt must be compacted in lifts (layers) of 6-8 inches. Each lift should be compacted to 95%+ density. Compaction reduces volume by 15-20% — order extra accordingly.

  • Compact in 6-8 inch lifts.
  • Target 95%+ compaction density.
  • Order 15-20% extra for settling.

Ordering Tips

Fill dirt is one of the cheapest materials by volume. Delivery fees are often more than the dirt itself. Check for minimum load requirements from your supplier.

  • Check delivery minimums.
  • Ask about source and testing.
  • Free fill may contain contaminants.

Fill Dirt FAQ

About 1.15 tons (2,300 lbs) per cubic yard for dry fill dirt. Wet fill weighs significantly more.

Order 15-20% extra to account for compaction. Fill dirt compresses as it is compacted in layers.
