How Deep Should Topsoil Be?
The right depth depends entirely on what you're growing. Too little and roots won't establish. Too much and you're wasting money. Here are the real-world recommendations:

For most lawn projects, 2 inches of topsoil is enough. New gardens need 6-12 inches. Raised beds need 12+ inches. Pick the right depth before you calculate — it makes a huge difference in how much you order.
The Topsoil Formula
Same formula as any cubic yard calculation:
Example: Topdressing a 2,000 sq ft lawn at 2 inches
- 2,000 × 2 = 4,000
- 4,000 ÷ 324 = 12.35 cubic yards
- Round up: Order 12.5 or 13 cubic yards
Example: New flower bed, 20 × 8 ft at 6 inches
- Area: 160 sq ft
- 160 × 6 ÷ 324 = 2.96 cubic yards
- Order: 3 cubic yards
Example: Raised bed, 4 × 8 ft at 12 inches
- Area: 32 sq ft
- 32 × 12 ÷ 324 = 1.19 cubic yards
- Order: 1.5 cubic yards (or buy bags for this small amount)

Topsoil is sold in bags (at garden centers) or in bulk (by the cubic yard from landscape suppliers). The cost difference is dramatic.

Bulk wins every time if you need more than about 1 cubic yard. At 2 yards, bagged topsoil could cost $100-$200. Bulk delivery for 2 yards typically runs $40-$110 plus a delivery fee of $30-$75.
Cheap topsoil often has clay, rocks, or weed seeds mixed in. Ask the supplier if their topsoil is screened (rocks and debris removed). Screened topsoil costs a bit more but saves you hours of picking rocks out of your garden beds.

Topsoil vs. Fill Dirt: Which Do You Need?
These are not the same thing, and using the wrong one wastes money or kills your plants.
- Topsoil — nutrient-rich, organic material. Use for gardens, lawns, and anywhere you want things to grow. Weighs about 2,000 lbs per cubic yard.
- Fill dirt — subsoil with no organic matter. Use for grading, raising elevation, filling holes, and building up land. It's not meant for growing. Weighs about 2,200-2,600 lbs per cubic yard.
Rule of thumb: If plants will grow in it, use topsoil. If you're just raising the ground level and covering it later, use fill dirt — it's cheaper and won't settle as much.
