One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet: 13.5 standard bags (2 cu ft) or 9 large bags (3 cu ft). Bulk mulch costs - per CY vs. - per CY equivalent for bagged.
Bagged vs. Bulk Mulch Decision Guide
- Bags (under 3 CY): Small beds, narrow borders, areas far from truck access.
- Bulk (3+ CY): Large beds, full-yard mulching. 40-60% cheaper per CY.
The cost crossover is approximately 2-3 cubic yards (27-40 bags). Above that, bulk delivery saves money even after the delivery fee.
How to Calculate Bags Needed
Formula: Area (sq ft) x Depth (ft) / Bag Volume (cu ft) = Number of Bags. For 200 sq ft at 3 inches using 2 cu ft bags: 200 x 0.25 / 2 = 25 bags.

Multiply bed area in square feet by depth in feet, divide by bag volume (2 cu ft for standard). For 300 sq ft at 3 inches: 300 x 0.25 / 2 = 37.5, round up to 38 bags.
A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet: 13.5 standard bags (2 cu ft each) or 9 large bags (3 cu ft each). Round up to 14 or 9 bags respectively.
Bulk mulch is 40-60% cheaper. Bagged costs - per cubic yard equivalent. Bulk costs - per CY plus - delivery. Break-even is about 2-3 cubic yards.
A 2 cu ft bag covers 12 sq ft at 2 inches or 8 sq ft at 3 inches. A 3 cu ft bag covers 18 sq ft at 2 inches or 12 sq ft at 3 inches.
Apply 2-3 inches for shredded mulch and 3-4 inches for chunk or nugget mulch. Never exceed 4 inches total depth.
A standard pickup holds 30-40 bags of 2 cu ft mulch. A long-bed holds 40-50 bags. Weight is not a concern since bags weigh only 20-40 lbs each.
