Understanding Asphalt Weight

How Much Does Asphalt Weigh?

Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is one of the heaviest paving materials, weighing approximately 2.0 tons (4,000 pounds) per cubic yard in its compacted state. Unlike concrete which is measured and sold by cubic yards, asphalt is almost always sold by the ton because the compaction process significantly changes its volume — a cubic yard of loose asphalt weighs less than the same material after rolling and compaction.

Why Compaction Changes Asphalt Weight Per Volume

When asphalt arrives on a truck, it is in a loose state with roughly 20–25% air voids. The paving machine lays it down, and then a series of rollers compress it to the target density — typically 92–96% of theoretical maximum density. This compaction reduces volume by about 20% while the weight stays constant. The result is that compacted asphalt weighs about 25% more per cubic yard than the same material in its loose, pre-compaction state.

This distinction matters when estimating quantities. If you order 10 tons of asphalt (enough to pave 50 square yards at 2 inches thick), that material arrives as roughly 3.1 loose cubic yards on the truck but compacts down to about 2.5 cubic yards in place.

Asphalt Weight per Square Foot and Square Yard

For asphalt paving, the useful weight metric is pounds per square yard at a given thickness, since that determines how many tons to order for a known area. At the industry-standard compacted density of 148 lbs per cubic foot:

  • 1 inch thick: 12.3 lbs per square foot (110 lbs per square yard)
  • 2 inches thick: 24.7 lbs per square foot (222 lbs per square yard)
  • 3 inches thick: 37 lbs per square foot (333 lbs per square yard)
  • 4 inches thick: 49.3 lbs per square foot (444 lbs per square yard)

A residential driveway typically uses 2–3 inches of asphalt. A commercial parking lot uses 3–4 inches. Heavy-duty roads may use 6+ inches in multiple lifts.

Asphalt Millings vs. Fresh Asphalt

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), also called asphalt millings, is ground-up old pavement reused as a base material or surface layer. Millings weigh about 20% less per cubic yard than fresh hot-mix because the milling process creates more air voids and the aged binder is lighter. A cubic yard of loose millings weighs about 2,600 lbs compared to 3,200 lbs for loose fresh HMA.

Millings cost significantly less ($10–$20 per ton vs. $80–$120 per ton for fresh HMA) and work well for rural driveways and temporary surfaces. However, millings don't compact as tightly and aren't suitable for permanent high-traffic applications.

Truck Load Capacities for Asphalt

Asphalt is delivered by belly-dump or end-dump trucks, and the heavy weight limits how much each truck can carry:

  • Single-axle dump truck: 5–7 tons of HMA (about 1.5–2 compacted cubic yards).
  • Tandem-axle dump truck: 12–15 tons (about 3–3.75 compacted cubic yards).
  • Tri-axle dump truck: 18–22 tons (about 4.5–5.5 compacted cubic yards).
  • Semi-trailer belly dump: 22–25 tons (about 5.5–6.25 compacted cubic yards).

Asphalt Weight FAQ

Compacted hot-mix asphalt (HMA) weighs about 4,000 pounds (2 tons) per cubic yard. Loose (uncompacted) asphalt weighs about 3,200 lbs per cubic yard. The 25% difference comes from rolling and compaction, which squeezes air voids out of the material.

At 2 inches thick (residential standard), you need about 110 lbs (0.055 tons) per square yard. At 3 inches thick (commercial), about 165 lbs (0.083 tons) per square yard. Use our asphalt calculator to get precise tonnage for your project dimensions.

At 1 inch thick, compacted asphalt weighs about 12.3 pounds per square foot. At 2 inches, 24.7 lbs/sf. At 3 inches, 37 lbs/sf. At 4 inches, 49.3 lbs/sf. These figures are based on a compacted density of 148 lbs per cubic foot, which is the industry standard for HMA.

Yes. Asphalt millings (RAP) weigh about 20% less per cubic yard than fresh hot-mix asphalt. Loose millings weigh about 2,600 lbs/yd³ versus 3,200 lbs/yd³ for loose HMA. The difference comes from the milling process creating more air voids and the aged binder being lighter than fresh asphalt cement.

A single-axle truck carries 5–7 tons, a tandem 12–15 tons, a tri-axle 18–22 tons, and a semi-trailer belly dump 22–25 tons. The heavy weight of asphalt means trucks are weight-limited before reaching full bed volume. A tandem truck with a 14-cubic-yard bed can only carry about 10 cubic yards of loose HMA before hitting weight limits.
